It all started a few weeks ago when Campaign ME published the MENA Power List 2021. The list included the movers and shakers of the region: 17 men. There were no women in the list!!
There were many reasons why there were no women on the list (you can read about them here). However, for me, one reason in particular stood out. Campaign ME senior editor wrote: “We [Campaign ME] did actively reach out to the few women who do head up international companies in the industry. Their agencies declined or were unable to take part.”
If you have been following me for a while, you may have noticed me repeating over and over again: “We need more women leaders, and for that we need more women storytellers.” We need more women to speak up. We need more women to tell us where they come from and how they got here. Which obstacles and challenges they faced, and how they overcame them. How they failed and stood up again. We need more women to use their voice to tell us their side of the story, to inspire, enable, and empower other women to grow as leaders.
Dear agencies, you have a responsibility towards the young professional women to unmute the voices of their women leaders. These young professionals need role models, someone to look up to to learn from, to aspire to be.
Unmute the voices of their women leaders. Let their voices be heard, let their stories be told, with all its ugly and glory.
